Castlebar Town Council candidate, Stephen Lavelle, has raised the issue of the danger to pedestrians using the roadway through Castle St Car park. “I have observed the danger to pedestrians and people pushing pushchairs attempting to walk along the road while traffic passes in both directions,” he said.
Now Lavelle, a first time candidate for Fianna Fáil, wants a designated pedestrian walkway to be provided, with bollards or some form of metal fencing to prevent vehicles from encroaching on the pedestrian walkway.
“While there are very good footpaths from Barrack Bridge into the car park, there is absolutely no protection for pedestrians on the most dangerous part, through the car park to the junction with Castle Street. We should ask for no less where the public road itself is concerned. It is unusual that people are forced to walk out on the public road in a built up, urban area, and at such a dangerous location,” he said.
“This matter needs urgent attention and while I agree that money may be scarce at this time, I believe the matter should be dealt with before a tragic accident forces a solution on us said Lavelle.
