EU wide reform of sheep farming sector vital for Irish farmers – Mooney

The future of the sheep farming sector in Ireland is under threat without further EU assistance and European wide reform, according to MEP candidate for the North West, Paschal Mooney (FF ).

Mr Mooney believes the entire industry must be reformed across the EU to give Irish sheep farmers a fighting chance at survival.

“We need greater EU assistance to market Irish lamb products across Europe,” said Mr Mooney. “We also need to reform the labelling regime that governs the sheep sector in Europe. Consumers are entitled to be fully aware of the place of origin of the lamb products they purchase and consume.

“A report has been carried out into the future of the sheep and lamb processing industries in Europe and these points have been set out as the blueprint for reform. I will push for these proposals to go ahead if elected to the European Parliament. The sheep farming sector across Europe needs financial support if it is to remain viable and competitive into the future,” he said.
