Mayo County Council election candidate Michael Loftus has welcomed funding of more than €56,000 to the Killala Historic Town Trail project.
The funding, totalling €56,598, was granted by Fáilte Ireland in accordance with the National Development Plan 2007-2013, and under the Tourism Development Sub Programme: Historic Town Initiative.
The Fianna Fáil candidate for the Ballina electoral area welcomed the funding, stating: “This money is for the development of the proposed Killala town trail and will see a new dimension added to the town. It is one of the most historically significant towns in the region, steeped in local history, folklore, and annals, having played a rich part in Mayo’s colourful past. Of course, it is also home to the famous round tower – an historical landmark of the west of Ireland. I am delighted that Fáilte Ireland have recognised the importance of Killala by granting this allocation.”
The funding must be utilised in the acquisition and provision of signage associated with the Killala Historic Town Trail, and Mr Loftus said the initiative will only prove to better the tourism potential of the area.
“This historic town trail will be a huge boost for Killala. Already the town sees scores of visitors each year who are keen to experience a piece of the history of Killala and the north Mayo region, and now there will be a dedicated walk to facilitate those tourists while, at the same time, generating local revenue,” concluded Mr Loftus.
