Novice cyclists to ride from London to Achill in memory of Shane Corrigan

The family and friends of Shane Corrigan – who died in 2018 from SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy ) - are organising a bike ride from London to Achill, where Shane is buried, to raise awareness of Epilepsy and the risks of SUDEP.

A statement on the event reads: "Shane was diagnosed with epilepsy in his second year of university at the age of 20, he died at 23. Shane is remembered for his larger than life, determined personality.

"He had a wonderful smile and you could pick out his infectious laugh from across a room. Shane was popular, unfailingly positive and he had the ability of bringing people together. For Shane, it didn’t matter who you were, he wanted to involve you in his conversations, debates and because of this, you always felt better for having been in his company."

Most of the group are inexperienced cyclists who have not tackled a ride quite like this before. Shane’s mum Peggy said: "This will be a serious challenge for all of us".

Jane Hanna, CEO of SUDEP Action UK, said: "We strive to bring about change – to prevent further deaths from SUDEP and stop others from having to endure what Shane’s family have gone through."

With the funds raised, Epilepsy Ireland plans to extend SUDEP Action’s renowned SUDEP and Seizure Safety Checklist in Ireland.

Peter Murphy CEO Epilepsy Ireland concluded saying: "This will undoubtedly help to prevent future SUDEP related deaths and will create a lasting legacy in Shane’s memory."
