Mayo are on the hunt for a new senior hurling manager after Derek Walsh decided to step down as manager following a successful spell in charge of the county.
The Ballyhaunis native who also captained the county during his playing days took over the team in 2018. In his first year in charge of the side he guided the county to the National Hurling League Division 2B title and Mayo managed to stay in Division 2A in the league for the following two seasons.
On the championship front Mayo made it to the Nicky Rackard Cup final in 2020 only to be pipped by Donegal in the final in Croke Park during the Covid-19-affected championship. The following year Mayo bounced back to reach the Rackard final again in 2021 and got over the line, beating Tyrone in the final. After a poor league run this year when championship came around, Mayo found their feet once more under Walsh and made their way to Croke Park in the Christy Ring Cup Final, where they came up against an impressive Kildare side and fell just short against the Leinster men.
Mayo GAA Chairperson Seamus Tuohy thanked Derek and his management team, saying they had continued to drive Mayo hurling forward, adding: "I want to thank Derek and his backroom team for their commitment, dedication and the huge effort they put in to keeping Mayo Hurling competitive over the past few years."
Mayo GAA will now ask the hurling clubs in the county to nominate suitable candidates for the position of hiring manager and, after consultation with the hurling board, the candidates will be shortlisted and interviewed for the position before recommendations are brought before a full meeting of the county board.
