All-new Mercedes-Benz GLC and more on the way

The latest new model from Mercedes-Benz is the all-new GLC. Expected here in the Autumn, when prices will be available, the GLC SUV ranks as the best-selling model in the Mercedes-Benz range over the past two years. (2.6 million units sold since first launched six years ago ).

Said by Mercedes-Benz to be ‘the most dynamic model in their SUV family’, the new GLC will be available in hybrid form only, either as a plug-in hybrid or as a ‘mild hybrid’ with 48-volt technology and an integrated starter-generator. Engines are 4-cylinder petrol and diesel units: four mild-hybrids and three plug-in hybrids with an electric-only range of more than 100kms (WLTP ). On the diesel model, exhaust after-treatment components are fitted to further control emissions.

With standard 4MATIC all-wheel-drive, GLC is comfortable on-road and off-road. Designed to create a balance between elegance and off-road capability, its visually-defining highlights include muscular wheel arches, wide track and flush wheels in 18-to-20-inch size. Exterior features include a new chrome-embellished radiator grille with ‘star’ pattern. A redesigned front end with headlamps that connect to the radiator grille emphasise its width. The ‘star’ pattern detail is repeated on new taillight lenses.

Inside, standard equipment has been significantly upgraded. Features include the latest generation MBUX infotainment system - now more digital and intelligent, and ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistance with dialogue and learning ability. An extensive choice of optional extras includes a panoramic sunroof.

A multi-function steering wheel and clearly structured dashboard give it a modern, sporty, luxury feel. A 12.3-inch high-resolution screen faces the driver with an 11.9-inch central display that rises above the centre console. Comfort elements include a mix of standard and optional items, including new air-control systems and ambient lighting in 64 colours.

At 4,716mm, it has a longer body and increased track widths, with a 0.29 Cd value marginally better than its predecessor. Boot capacity is significantly larger. A touch-button tailgate opens and closes automatically. Towing capacity is 2.5 tonnes.

More new-arrivals coming soon

The second half of the year will see no let-up in the pace of new model introductions at Mercedes-Benz.

Also planned are eleven other new arrivals, including facelifted versions of the popular A-Class and B-Class, accompanied by high-performance Mercedes-AMG A35 & A45 models in each case.

Also arriving will be a new AMG SL, high-performance version of a model generally regarded as one of motoring’s most iconic creations.

Continuing the AMG story, other newcomers will be an AMG GT 4-door Coupé and AMG-branded versions of the recently introduced EQE and EQS – a Mercedes-AMG EQE 43, EQE 53 and EQS 53 AMG.

In a comment, Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in Ireland said: “Arrivals in the second half of the year will see our model offering in Ireland brought totally up-to-date with a heavier-than-ever concentration of all-electric, plug-in electric and mild hybrid model choice.”
