Among the many multi-faceted events programmed at the Linenhall Arts Centre this July are two compelling stage productions, of very different, but equally engaging ilks.
Beezneez theatre company presents the much-requested revival tour of John McDwyer’s classic comedy, Unforgiven on July 12. Described by McDwyer as: "A mad play about mad people who are content with their madness". Unforgiven is a rip-roaring comedy about PJ and his brother Seamus who are awaiting their father’s death, while their neighbour Mary nurses her mother through her final illness. When the father dies and another brother returns from America, a chain of events are set in place which results in an unexpected and hilarious outcome.
Unforgiven first premiered in 2006, capturing the hearts of audiences with its quirky construction and huge quota of laugh out loud one-liners. This tour, complete with a new cast features Peadar Conway, Barry Deignan, Brian Gallagher and Valerie Traynor.
A visually stunning performance, weaving dance and narrative in a journey of gentle support and empowerment is Unearth on Thursday, July 14. Artistic director Kate Wilson has brought together an intergenerational ensemble, including Irish and international performers, with ages ranging from 12-50, to form this unique troupe. The result of a year long collaborative development process, Unearth embraces diverse voices and perspectives, reflecting on our inherent connection to earth.
Created in the context of the current health and environmental crisis, Unearth blends visceral imagery and dance with narrative and music, stories of support are interwoven with structures that both restrict and liberate. At times balancing on the edge of stability and physical threat, these structures are collectively created, navigated, and eventually dismantled. Exquisitely lit, with a richly textured soundscape, the audience is invited into an intimate world that ultimately resonates with, and celebrates the positive power of union and collaboration.
Undercurrent Collective, devised and founded by Kate Wilson will also be holding a dance theatre workshop, complementing Unearth on July 13th at the Linenhall. Inclusive and fun, it focuses on non-verbal communication and the joy of expression through movement, image and sound. The theme of reaching beyond restriction and boundaries, within the world of our body and the landscape of our everyday life, will be investigated.
