Bringing an eclectic music element to the Linenhall theatre on Friday, June 24, is ‘No Crows’, a dynamic folk orchestra from the multicultural melting pot of Sligo’s music scene.
Formed in 2005, No Crows' growing output of original material reflects its diverse musical roots, from Irish traditional to Latin rumba, classical, jazz, rock and Balkan music.
Audiences have been astonished by the unparalleled breadth of the band’s unique repertoire, ranging from delicate Irish airs to Gypsy mayhem, to Mallorcan Jota, featuring lush string arrangements. Their musical mix reflects the folk traditions of the various members, plus a combined lifetime of experience, across a spectrum of genres.
Violinist Oleg Ponomarev, has, for several years now, challenged the heady mix that is ‘No Crows’ trad and folk style with his gypsy and jazz influenced compositions, something the band members relish.
Bassist Eddie Lee, well known in Sligo for his curation of Sligo Jazz Project’s annual Festival and Summer School, describes Oleg’s influence: "Oleg writes tunes that challenge and excite everyone, especially us lucky musicians who have to play them. It truly is an honour to perform them with him."
No Crows most recent album, the brilliant live recording, Escape, is a superb collection of their best tunes, played with the spontaneity for which their live performances are renowned.
