Three Connected Hubs projects in Mayo were successful in securing funding to build capacity and enhance existing remote working facilities under the Connected Hubs Call 2022.
The three projects in Mayo to secure funding were DigiSpace Claremorris, Cairns Enterprise Hub and Atlantic Technological University.
DigiSpace Claremorris has received €20,070 for the installation of a remote access system linked to connected hubs and digispace website, CCTV security system, outdoor lighting, and tables and chairs for the conference facility.
The Cairns Enterprise Hub received €75,000 to modernise the main entrance, install two additional hot desk spaces, two defibrillators, PV panels, and a heat pump.
Atlantic Technological University received €53,180 to enhance remote working infrastructure by converting an existing open space into multiple hot desks. This will increase the capacity of the area.
The funding was announced as part of a series of initiatives that will make remote working more accessible and attractive for thousands of people in Mayo.
Minister Heather Humphreys launched the Connected Hubs Voucher Scheme and €5 million in funding for 81 projects, through the Connected Hubs 2022 Call, which will be used to build capacity and enhance existing remote working facilities.
Fine Gael Deputy Alan Dillon welcomed the news, saying: "Remote working has been a game-changer for thousands of people. It’s given people of all ages a better quality of life – allowing them to spend more time with their family and friends, working within their local town or village.
"The Connected Hubs Voucher scheme will provide at least 10,000 free days at hot desks in hubs across the country. It will be available to existing hub users who are already enjoying the benefits of working from a hub in their local area.
"On top of above initiatives, Minister Humphreys also announced the provision of €50,000 in funding to local authorities under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme which will allow them to fund marketing campaigns and promote the remote working opportunities available in their areas."
His party colleague Deputy Michael Ring also welcomed the announcement, saying: "The Connected Hubs Vouchers will be available to existing hub users but it is aimed at new users too. This scheme will appeal to someone who has never worked in their local hub – now they can try it out for the first time for free.
"This scheme is based on the ‘voucher follows the person’ approach and will initially provide three days of hub use per person between now and the end of August. I would strongly encourage potential new hub users and those thinking of a working staycation to set up a connectedhubs.ie profile.
"Remote working has become enormously significant in the revitalisation of rural Ireland, particularly in Mayo. These digital hubs in our communities increase local footfall and regenerate our towns and villages."
