In a Project Update to Castlebar Municipal District at its most recent May meeting, Mayo County Council reported that the N5 Westport to Turlough route, which connects on to the main Westport-Dublin N5 motorway, is progressing well, with expectations that the road will be ready to officially open in Q2 of 2023 - if not before.
The Project Update stated: "The N5 Westport to Turlough Road Project involves the design and construction of approximately 20km of Type 2 dual carriageway and approximately 7.5km of single carriageway (Type 1, 2 & 3 ). The project includes the upgrade of a 2.5km section of the N59 Westport to Mulranny national secondary road at Barleyhill and also includes the design and construction of 2 no. compact grade separated junctions, 6 no. at grade roundabouts, 2 no. rail bridges over the Dublin to Westport rail line and 24 no. bridge structures.
"Wills BAM Joint Venture are the contractors for the construction of the N5 Westport to Turlough Road and have recently indicated that they are anticipating the completion of the contract to be in Q2 2023. Paving works are progressing very well on Sections B (Knockranny to Derrylea ) and C (Derrylea to Dublin Road )."
Traffic Management
"The Major Structures in the Castlebar area are substantially complete with most of them opened to traffic. Traffic management arrangements are in place in various locations in the Castlebar area. These will change as works to the structures and roundabouts are finished and tie-ins to the existing road network is being constructed.
"Keelogues Road was closed from 19 April to 23 May to enable tie-in works to the existing road on both sides of the bridge. Traffic Management arrangements are in place at the Belcarra Road and N5 Derrylea Roundabout. Access from the old N5 to the Islandeady Road has been closed while works are completed on the south approach to the Islandeady Road Bridge. Traffic from and to Islandeady is being routed along the new Islandeady Cemetery Road. Traffic management arrangements are to be in place at its junction with the N5 to complete the tie-in works."
Liaison with the public
"There were no complaints within the last month received by this office. General information on the scheme had been requested from the public and this has been disseminated to them."
