Ireland is leading the way when it comes to viewing Europe in a positive light,” according to MEP candidate for the North West, Paschal Mooney (FF ).
A major new survey published by Le Figaro on attitudes to Europe sees Irish respondents at the top of the table in terms of looking at Europe as an ‘opportunity’ for the country.
In response to the central question ‘in a context of globalisation, in particular free movement of goods and people, do you see Europe as an opportunity or a threat?’ - Ireland heads the table with 72 per cent answering ‘opportunity’.
Just 21 per cent of Irish respondents answered ‘threat’ and three per cent said ‘neither one nor the other’.
The average for the corresponding answers across the EU is 56 per cent, 17 per cent, and 20 per cent.
“The majority of Irish people recognise the value and importance of being at the heart of the European Union,” said Mr Mooney.
“Europe is vital for our local communities and will help us to create better job opportunities and provide strong infrastructure at a time of economic turmoil.
“In turn, this survey shines a very positive light on Ireland, as a leading and integral member of the European Union,” he said.
