Harkin lashes Fianna Fáil election promises

The country’s roads will be decimated in future if the election promises made by Fianna Fáil on rates and levies are implemented without upfront guarantees.

This was stated by Independent MEP Marian Harkin when she called for irrevocable commitment of the €300 million to €400 million needed to implement the election promises.

“I fully endorse the call to freeze commercial rates and to reduce levies but I have no trust whatever in this government to deliver on their promise to provide balancing payments through the Local Government Fund,” she said.

As she canvassed around the country the lack of investment in roads maintenance and in sewerage systems were continuously being raised, she said. “If the Government is not willing to provide County Councils, through an irrevocable commitment, the funds necessary to replace rates and levies, these election promises will be seen as the gimmick they clearly are,” Marian Harkin MEP said.
