Launch of Navigating A Future: Artists showcase and panel discussion

Mayo County Council has announced the launch event for Navigating a Future, which will take place at Ballina Arts Centre at 6pm on Friday, May 20.

On the evening there will be a showcase of the artists’ work and a discussion with the artists facilitated by Sarah Searson, Commissioned Interviewer and Editor. A digital publication documenting the project, including extracts from artist interviews, will be available online after the launch on www.mayo.ie/arts/public-art An exhibition showcasing the project, will run upstairs at Ballina Art Centre, from May 20 until June 25 2022.

In November 2020, Mayo County Council commissioned four artists for a public art commission entitled ‘Navigating a Future’. Key to the thinking behind this commission was the desire to give artists living in the county 'an opportunity to respond to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and to consider our lives going forward. Artists are well placed to respond to unusual times of social change; through their practice they explore, question and reflect, giving rise to unique and unusual insights'.

The commissioned artists were Breda Burns, visual artist; Catherine Donnelly, dance artist; Breda Mayock, musician and visual artist and Áine O’Hara, visual artist and theatre maker.

This commission is part of Mayo County Council’s Public Art Programme, funded by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage under the Per Cent for Art Scheme.
