The Mayo hurlers got themselves right back in contention in the Christy Ring Cup with a six point win over London in Ruislip last weekend.
It was the second win in as many weeks for Derek Walsh’s side following their victory over Wicklow in round two of the competition.
Mayo have a weekend off from the action this weekend, before they host Sligo in round four in Ballina on Saturday, May 7 - where a victory there over their Northern neighbours would send them into their final game of the round robin stages of the competition at home to Derry with a serious chance of staking a claim for a spot in the final of the competition.
Walsh’s side powered out in front early doors last weekend against London and put themselves into a 13 point lead by the half time break.
Keith Higgins, Sean Kenny, Eoghan Delaney and Mark Phillips were all on the scoreboard early for Mayo as they led 0-7 to 0-2 by the quarter of an hour mark. They kept up the pressure with a string of scores before the break with Shane Boland adding four points to their tally along with other scores from Joe Mooney, Joe McManus and Higgins - before Mayo struck their only goal of the day.
That score arrived off the stick of Boland who arrowed the ball to the bottom of the net after some good build-up play involving Higgins, Delaney and Mooney to set him free. That goal combined with the other earlier scores saw Mayo go in leading 1-16 to 0-6 at the short whistle.
London did mount a small fight back early in the second half reeling off a number of points, but a flurry of Mayo points from Mooney, Boland, Delaney and McManus settled the nerves and they were up 1-20 to 0-9 with 55 minutes gone.
The exiles did manage to get two late goals, something that Mayo will be keen to avoid next time out when they host Sligo, but a late Kenny Feeney free finished off the scoring for Mayo and sends them into round four against the Yeats County in high confidence.
