The Mayo senior hurlers picked up their first win of the season with a big win on the road in the Garden County - seeing off Wicklow by ten points and hitting 26 points of their own on the way to a 0-26 to 2-10 victory.
This was the third time that the sides had met this season in league and championship, with the other two games ending in a draw and victory for Wicklow in the league relegation play-off.
Mayo will be looking to build up a run of winning form when they make the trip over the Irish Sea this weekend, when they take on London on Saturday afternoon in Ruislip in round three.
Both sides are level on points in the standings at the moment, with one win and one loss each to their names. Mayo were heavily defeated by Kildare in round one, the Lillywhites also got one over on London last weekend in round two, with the exiles getting a win in round one over Sligo by five points.
Mayo have travelled to London already this season in round two of the league, where the hosts came away with a 4-11 to 1-10 win back in February, but Mayo will be keen to reverse that result this time around.
Newcomer to the Mayo set-up, Joe Mooney was the main man for Derek Walsh's side against Wicklow, hitting eight points from centre-half-forward with the former Galway u21 man having a major impact in the side since he joined up with them recently. He was ably supported by the likes of Shane Boland, who hit five points, and Eoin Delaney, who bagged four for himself in the victory.
Mayo raced into the game against Wicklow on the scoreboard and were four points to the good inside the opening few minutes and they kept up the pressure, leading 0-5 to 0-3 at the quarter of an hour mark and pushed on even more to lead 0-13 to 0-7 at the half time break. While Wicklow did get in for two goals in the second half, Mayo kept their composure adding on another 13 points of their own and limiting Wicklow to just three points to go with their two goals to run out comprehensive winners.
After a difficult league campaign and start to the Christy Ring Cup, this win will hopefully bolster the confidence in the side and see them push on for the rest of the championship season in front of them.
