The Mayo Mountain Rescue Team (MMRT ) had a busy week with four different call-outs for their assistance since last Friday, March 18.
The first call-out last Friday came when they were tasked to assist a casualty at Old Head, where a female had sustained a lower leg injury while walking on a trail - she was aided by strangers who came across her until the arrival of assistance from MMRT, the coastguard and the ambulance service, to stretcher her from where she fell to a waiting ambulance on the pier.
On Sunday, March 20 at 4.30pm, MMRT were called to assist a 65-year-old male who picked up an ankle injury on the front section of Croagh Patrick, below the shoulder. The casualty determined that he would proceed down the mountain with the assistance of his party, which he managed to do while the team leader from MMRT maintained close contact throughout with the casualty and kept the team on standby. The casualty and his party descended safely at 6.30pm.
The following day, Monday, March 21 at 4pm, saw MMRT tasked to assist a woman who had fallen on the cone of Croagh Patrick and sustained a shoulder injury. Because of the severity of the injury, the Irish Coast Guard (ICG ) helicopter was requested by the MMRT Leader. Two winch-men from the ICG were on scene with the casualty when MMRT members arrived, the casualty had been sustained and kept warm by kind strangers on the mountain. The casualty was winched from the cone and the team were stood down at 6.30pm.
Also on Monday, March 21 at 7.01pm, MMRT was tasked by Gardai to assist two walkers who required assistance descending Croagh Patrick. MMRT deployed response teams from the front of the Reek at Murrisk, and also from the back of the Reek at Tievnecroaghy, and both walkers safely descended with the assistance of MMRT. The MMR team was stood down at 9.31pm.
