Mayo Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon is demanding that action be taken on a stretch of road at Castlehill on the R315 between Crossmolina and Lahardane.
Deputy Dillon said significant work is urgently needed to improve the overall safety of the road and to remedy 'this notorious accident black spot'.
He elaborated: "The R315 serves as a busy road for local traffic including school buses and is also used as a main artery by people travelling from Crossmolina, Kilfian and Ballycastle to Castlebar. I continue to engage with Mayo County Council's Head of Roads, Paul Dolan, and acknowledge his team's efforts in submitting the preliminary appraisal form to the Department of Transport.
"Last month I was delighted to confirm that the Department of Transport granted €60,000 in the 2022 road allocations for the R315 Castlehill scheme, encompassing the widening and re-alignment of approximately 1,700m of the R315.
"This will allow Mayo County Council to proceed with initial design, environmental appraisal, appropriate assessment screening and hopefully Part 8 Planning. However, should a Natura Impact Statement be required, then the scheme will proceed to An Bord Pleanala for approval."
Deputy Dillon added: "Assuming the local authority is successful with the initial design, environmental impact studies and planning, this road project would then proceed with detailed design, land acquisition and tender documents in 2023.
"I intend to monitor progress closely over the coming months to ensure this specific improvement project is delivered for the local communities and R315 commuters."
