Flynn calls for car park charges to be used to improve Reek toilets

A Westport based councillor has said that he will look for parking charges to be suspended in Murrisk if improvements are not made to the toilet facilities in the car park at Croagh Patrick.

Cllr Peter Flynn was speaking at the adjourned February meeting of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District which took place virtually this week.

Cllr Flynn said that the toilets were a disgrace and that €40,000 a year was collected in parking charges at the car park and he called for money from this to be allocated to improving the toilet facilities there.

He told the meeting that: "Murrisk is the only car park in the county outside of the towns that has parking charges in operation. It pulls in over €40,000 a year and is more than self-financing, it should be used for us to do our bit for the people of Murrisk and help them out.

“I’m going to be nice at the moment and ask for co-operation and that the works be advanced, but if there is no progress this year, I will be coming back and looking to suspend the parking charges in Murrisk. It’s not like there is nothing coming into Murrisk, and it is the least we can do to enhance the facilities."
