Call to raise dough for brain injury - Bake’ a difference for Brain Injury this March

The public has been called on this March to 'raise some dough for the 19,000 people who acquire a brain injury each year in Ireland'.

Bake for Brain Injury will take place nationwide throughout March to support rehabilitation and services for people and their families.

Acquired Brain Injury Ireland CEO Barbara O’Connell has called on bakers, eaters and donators to join forces at a time that suits them, either virtually or in person, during the month.

She said: "We are encouraging people to organise an event that will ‘bake’ a difference for brain injury survivors. It’s an extra special celebration this year because it’s the 10th anniversary of Bake for Brain Injury.

"After a challenging couple of years due to Covid-19, we want to mark this milestone by making this year’s event bigger than ever. We’re asking all our supporters, and new supporters, to celebrate our brain injury survivors.

"People can register on the ABII website and we will send you a pack including your very own branded Apron!

"You can hold either a virtual or physical bake event. A ‘virtual bake’ would involve a video call with your friends, family, or colleagues. Or with Covid restrictions lifting, you might be able to host a safe physical event at home, at work, or at school."

O’Connell also highlighted a need 'for urgent engagement with the HSE and Department of Health to bring hundreds of people out of nursing homes to rehabilitation and greater independence'.

She said: "A report by the Ombudsman in 2021 showed that up to 1,300 younger people are inappropriately in nursing homes, which is detrimental to their life experience.

"A significant number of these people are there because of an acquired brain injury. We can partner with the HSE to assist hundreds of people to become more independent, by providing Rehabilitation Assistants, Case Management and a pathway towards an appropriate setting.

"Funds raised will help to provide ongoing services for approximately 1,200 people annually and also for Acquired Brain Injury Ireland to work towards specialised rehabilitation for many more people and families across the country."
