Train detection warning systems installed at Mayo crossings

larnród Éireann has recently installed train detection warning systems at user-worked level crossings at two locations in Mayo.

larnród Éireann stated: "The systems were installed at Knockaphunta Level Crossing (XM 250 ) on the Castlebar to Westport line and near Pollagh at Level Crossing (XX 039 ) on the Manulla Junction to Ballina Line.

"The aim of these systems is to provide level crossing users with improved information about the approach of trains, helping them to better determine when it is not safe to cross.

"The system operates by track train detectors which sends a signal when approaching trains are detected to a visual warning light unit(s ) positioned at the point of user interface at the level crossing. Other system components at user interface include system information signage and audio warning.

"The systems were implemented throughout January and February and it is expected that further rollouts will occur throughout the year.

"While the detection systems add another level of protection, it is important to remember that it is the responsibility of level crossing users to use crossings correctly, to check the line before crossing, and to always close crossing gates afterwards, for the safety of following road users, and rail customers and staff."
