Creative and comedic delights at The Linenhall this March

The Linenhall Arts Centre has a marvellous mix of upcoming events for Mayo audiences and creatives in March, including the return of comedy favourite Danny O’Brien to his spiritual home of Castlebar, as part of the ‘The God of All Things Bad’ tour.

Following O’Brien’s life over an 18-month period, from making one of the highest ratings stand-up specials in Irish television history, to spending three months stranded in Central America, the show chronicles Danny’s hilarious journey over land and sea to Guatemala to discover ‘Maximón’, the Mayan deity that gives the show its name. Danny O’Brien: ‘The God of All Things Bad’ takes place at the Linenhall on Friday, March 4 at 8pm. Tickets are available from www.thelinenhall.com or by contacting 094 9023733.

A ‘Meet The Artist’ evening with Peter Bradley, oil painter and creator of ‘Sonder’, the Linenhall gallery’s current exhibition, will be hosted at the Linenhall on Thursday, March 3 at 5.30pm. ‘Sonder’ has been hugely well received to date, Bradley’s combination of skill, experimental materials and his paintings’ interactions with the environment around them have proven immensely popular. Themes of identity, gender, sex and sexuality are prevalent throughout this colourful and skill-saturated body of work.

Based in Galway, Peter Bradley studied art in Limerick and was shortlisted for the Hennessy Portrait Prize in 2016 and Zurich Portrait Prize in 2018. This event is free but places are limited so booking early is strongly advised to avoid disappointment. ‘Sonder’ will remain exhibited in the Linenhall gallery until March 5.

Proudly presented by the Linenhall and Fighting Words, Mayo, is a ‘Young Playwrights Programme’ commencing Saturday, March 5. A spectacular opportunity for young creatives and writers aged 16-18 years old, this programme consists of a series of workshops, during which participants will work towards creating a ten-minute play. Guidance and experience will be gained from seasoned mentors throughout the eight-week course.

After writing the short play, each fledgling wordsmith will then witness it come to life - matched with a professional theatre director and professional actors, their play will be performed on stage at the Linenhall. An unmissable opportunity for budding creatives, please contact [email protected] for additional information/booking.
