Derry next port of call for Mayo

GAA: National Hurling League

The Mayo senior hurlers go in search of their first win of the new season this weekend when they make the trip to Celtic Park in Derry on Sunday to take on the Oak Leaf county in round three of the National Hurling League, Division 2B.

Derek Walsh's side have one point from their opening two games following their draw with Wicklow on the opening day of the league. They followed that up with a trip to London a fortnight ago where the exiles saw them off 4-11 to 1-10.

Derry, in comparison, have won two from two so far this year in the league, beating Sligo 2-14 to 1-14 round one and having a big 2-24 to 0-12 win on the road against Wicklow in round two. They currently sit top of the table on four points alongside Donegal after the opening two rounds, with Mayo sitting back in fourth spot with just a point to their names alongside Wicklow, with Sligo bottom of the six-team group with no points.

Walsh's side will be keen to pick up a win this weekend as they look to get themselves up and running and ready to hit the Christy Ring Cup hard later in the Spring. They will be looking to tighten up at the back, having conceded four goals last time out and with Derry having hit four goals themselves over their two outings to date; they know the Ulster men know where the back of the net is.

Mayo will also be hoping to have a more experienced side to call on than the one they had against London for this tough-looking encounter, with the likes of team captain Shane Boland and Adrian Phillips their key men so far this year for getting scores - needing to be on their game again.
