Council cutbacks mean Mayo streets are not cleaned at weekends

Cut backs in funding to Mayo County Council are beginning to impact on the services being provided by the council, councillors in the Claremorris electoral area were told this week.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Carty said street bins were not being emptied in towns in the Claremorris electoral area over the weekend period.

This was confirmed by the director of services for the area, Seamus Granahan, who said the whole issue of overtime had to be looked at with some curtailments being implemented.

Mr Granahan said the council were looking at different options of providing the service at the weekend but every element of the workings of the council is under scrutiny in an effort to make savings.

Cllr Carty stressed the need for bins in Knock to be emptied at the weekend, especially over the summer months when 1.5 million people visit the holy shrine.

Cllr Pat McHugh agreed, dubbing ‘mindless’ the people who throw rubbish on the streets and out of car windows. He suggested the service be reduced during the week and reinstated at weekends.

The streets are a disgrace on Sunday mornings, according to Cllr Tom Connolly, while Cllr John Cribbin said the “boat needs to be pushed out on Saturdays and Sundays”.
