Drunk man told gardaí they would be ‘banished to Bonniconlon’

A 53-year-old man who while intoxicated refused to give his name to gardaí and told them that they would be “banished to Bonniconlon” faced a section eight public order charge, for failure to comply with gardaí, at Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

Garda Charles Elliott received a report about a disturbance on October 27 2008 at 2.18am at Church Road, Ballina. When Garda Elliott arrived at the scene he observed Eamon McLoughlin, 1 Abbey Park, Ardnaree, Ballina, slumped against a car and a lady informed the garda that McLoughlin had kicked her door. The defendant refused to give his name or leave the area.

Solicitor, John Gordon, said that the man, who had returned from the UK five years ago, was on medication at the time for an injury and only drinks two to three times a year. Mr Gordon said that his client has no recollection of the incident and has no previous convictions.

Judge Mary Devins applied the Probation Act and directed that €150 be paid to the Motor Neurone Association.
