Tooreen top of the tree in Connacht again

GAA: Connacht IHC Final; Tooreen 1-15 Moycullen 0-14

A top class second half display in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Bekan saw Tooreen claim their third Connacht Intermediate Hurling Championship title in five seasons.

The east Mayo men had to battle all the way against Galway champions Moycullen before edging out the Tribesmen on a score of 1-15 to 0-14 in front of a healthy crowd of supporters.

In a ding dong affair, it was all square at the break on a score of 0-8 to 0-8 with Shane Boland and Moycullen's Anraoi Whyte doing the the majority of the damage for their respective sides on the scoreboard.

The Mayo men had the wind at their backs in the first half and having not failed to put themselves into a lead at the turnaround, it looked like they would be in trouble, but when they needed to be counted, their big players stood up, with the likes of David Kenny, Joe Boyle, Cathal Freema, Fergal Boland and Sean Regan all stepping up to the mark when needed.

Both Shane Boland and Whyte engaged in a scoring contest of their own during the game with Boland finishing up with ten points and Whyte nine, over the hour.

The vital score of the game came early in the second half when Boyle spotted Sean Regan at the edge of the square and he drove the ball home to the back of the net to give Tooreen the vital goal in this closely contested affair.

That goal gave Tooreen the cushion they needed to keep their noses in front of the Galway men and they were able to repel a couple of late goal attempts by Moycullen, to claim the provincial title once again.

After the Christmas break the east Mayo men will be looking to make the breakthrough in the All Ireland series and, hopefully, get a day out in Croke Park in an All Ireland Final.
