There is expected to be some good news on improving the N26 between Mount Falcon outside of Ballina and Foxford in the coming weeks.
Speaking at the Roads and Transport Strategic Policy Committee (SPC ) of Mayo County Council this week, director of services for the local authority, Tom Gilligan, said he was hopeful that the council would get positive news on the road in the next two weeks, in relation to two minor works schemes the council have applied for to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII ), in regard to the road.
Speaking at the meeting, Fianna Fáil councillor, Annie May Reape, said that she understood that An Taoiseach, Michaél Martin, had given a commitment to start works on one section of the road, with money being made available to get things going.
The two minor works schemes had been discussed by members of the SPC with TII at a recent meeting between the two bodies. Cllr Reape said that it was a move in the right direction along with progress being made on a new orbital relief route around the town.
Independent councillor Seamus Weir said that he wanted to see the N26 'be the top priority on the upcoming council County Development Plan', while Cathaoirleach of the SPC, Cllr Damien Ryan, added that it appeared 'there was light on the horizon for the N26 after being off the agenda for too long'.
