Three Mayo-based animal welfare organisations will share in funding of €86,500, it was announced this week.
The three organisations to receive the funding from the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine are North West SPCA, who will receive €52,000, Mayo SCPA will receive €17,500 and Ainmhithe Animal Rescue Ballina will receive €17,000.
Welcoming the announcement, Deputy Michael Ring said: "This funding will contribute to the protection of surrendered, abandoned and at-risk animals. Animal welfare organisations carry out tremendous work here in Mayo and I am delighted to see this work being recognised and funding being made available to help their excellent work to continue. The staff and volunteers do outstanding work and I would like to take this opportunity to recognise their contribution."
Deputy Dara Calleary added: "Each of these organisations are involved in very important work in Mayo, playing a vital role in implementing the Animal Health and Welfare Act - I am delighted that this funding will allow that work to continue and I wish all three well for the year ahead."
The announcement was also welcomed by Deputy Alan Dillon who said: "I want to especially thank the many volunteers dedicated to animal welfare protection, this is frontline work that we can all be proud of and they contribute greatly to Irish society."
