Over €50,000 raised for Chernobyl

The Bricks 4 Hope Art Auction, which was recently held in Westport was a huge success and helped push the Chernobyl Children’s Project Westport Outreach Group over its €50,000 fundraising finish line to build a Home of Hope for children in Belarus.

The Art Auction, which showcased the best of Westport’s artists, raised well over €20,000. This added to other funds raised by the group over the past year and a half through smaller projects and donations, means that 10 children in Belarus can now enjoy a near normal family life in a comfortable, loving home instead of living in an institution.

In addition to the Art Auction, the group’s Bricks 4 Hope project was a bit hit. Nearly 1,600 cardboard bricks were coloured and painted by local school children. The bricks have now been built into a multi-coloured cardboard Home 4 Hope and are on display behind Nally’s Pharmacy on Mill Street.

The Chernobyl Children’s Project would like to thank the many children and their parents, artists, helpers and volunteers as well as buyers who helped make their ambitious project a reality.
