Ballyheane move closer to the title

Soccer: Mayo League

Ballyheane took a big step towards a first ever Super League title with a big 5-0 win at home over Claremorris last Sunday.

The Quigley Park outfit saw Ben Edeh and Liam Irwin both finish with a brace and Paddy Bourke netted their other goal as Ashley Stevenson's side kept up their unbeaten record as they head into the final few games of the season.

Ballyheane will not be in action in the Super League this weekend, but the other four sides in the top half of the division following the split between top and bottom will be, and Ballina Town will be looking to join them at the top of the table when they take on Westport United in Belleek.

The north Mayo men kept up their chase last weekend with a 2-0 win over Manulla on the road. Ryan Moran and Niall Casey got the goals for the 'Town - if Ballina pick up the points this weekend they will be level with Ballyheane when the sides meet in the following round of league action. The other game in the top half of the table this weekend will see Claremorris at home to Manulla.

In the battle to beat the drop, Ballyhaunis Town took a big step in their battle to avoid a relegation place come the end of the season with a 4-3 win over Swinford on the road. Goals from Dayo Adex, Andy Cunnane and Hamad Althohahey had the Station Rise outfit in control early on. Chris McHale-Roe's side did pull it back to just a single goal game when James Devaney bagged a brace, but Ballyhaunis went two clear again through Dayo Adex's second goal. Swinford did make it close before the end through an Ian Price effort, but Ballyhaunis Town held on for the vital win.

The other game in the bottom section of the Super League saw Castlebar Celtic claim a 4-3 win over Ballyglass on the road. Liam Whyte and Colm Nevin put the 'Hoops in front early on, Ballyglass struck back with Conor Heneghan and Alan Commins scoring - but Fionn McMahon and Basho Hay bagged goals for Celtic to secure the points for the county town men.

Tonra Cup heads to Crossmolina

For the second year in a row the Tonra Cup will be wintering on the banks of the Deel, following Crossmolina's 3-2 win over Moy Villa in Solar 21 Park last Sunday. Niall Coggins put the side in front early doors after he collected a ball from Ian Gordon. The Villa levelled the game up just after the half hour mark when a cross from Stewart Griffen was headed into the back of the net by a Crossmolina defender.

The eventual victors took the lead again from the penalty spot through Kevin Campbell, he got to take his spot kick twice - his first effort was saved by the Moy Villa keeper but he was judged to have stepped off his line before the kick was taken and Campbell made no mistake with his second effort. Moy Villa kept coming and they levelled the game up when Ciaran Gaughan slotted home 25 minutes from the end of the game. The winning goal came five minutes from the end when Steward Griffen headed home from a corner to seal the win for Crossmolina.
