Knockmore ended a two decade old empire in James Stephens Park in Ballina on Sunday afternoon when the claimed the Mayo LGFA Senior Football Championship, with a 1-16 to 0-7 win.
The north Mayo side led from pillar to post in this game with Shauna Howley the main star of the show kicking point after point for her side.
Knockmore raced out into an early 0-5 to 0-0 lead, with Howley moving the scoreboard for her side. Carnacon got moving through two pointed dress from Cora Staunton. Sarah Mulvihill landed Knockmore’s sixth point, before Staunton scored again to cut the gap to three points - but it was Knockmore who drove on and points from Hannah Reape and Howely had them leading 0-8 to 0-3 at the break.
Carnacon got the first score of the second half through Amy Dowling but it wasn’t going to be their day as Knockmore kept piling on the scores with Rachael Fox, Abbie Traynor and Louise Coleman all getting in on the act, along with two more points from Howley to put their side nine clear.
Staunton cut the gap back to seven with two points on the bounce, but any designs they had of reeling in the eventual winners was quenched when Lara Sweeney’s long range effort dropped to the back of the net and put her side into a 1-13 to 0-6 lead.
There was still time for Howley to tag on a couple more points along with one from Sweeney for winners, with Carnacon getting one in response and when the final whistle went it was dream time for the north Mayo side.
Mitchels and Davitts claim titles
Castlebar Mitchels claimed the Mayo LGFA Intermediate title with a 2-20 to 1-5 win over Louisburgh while Davitts claimed the Junior title with a 4-6 to 2-8 win over St Brigid’s.
