Fianna Fáil TD, Dara Calleary, has called for traffic calming measures to be implemented on the Quay Road and Quay Village in Ballina.
Deputy Calleary said: "I have been actively engaging with Ballina municipal area officials of Mayo County Council in respect of a long-term development plan for the Quay Harbour area for a number of months now.
"A plan is being finalised and will be submitted for funding approval in the coming months. However, in the meantime, I am very anxious that traffic calming measures be implemented in the Quay Village.
"While I understand that any short-term measures need to be considered in the context of the overall development plan, the increased volume of vehicular, pedestrian and cycle traffic on the road during the past 18 months, means that it is now a health and safety concern and action must be taken.
"Having liaised with Cllr Annie May Reape and the area engineers, I am informed that safety improvement works are to be included in the Ballina Municipal District Low Cost Safety List which will be forwarded to Mayo County Council’s Road Section for consideration next week,” he explained.
"I will be pursuing this with the roads section of the Council and subsequently with the department to ensure the funding is made available, so that locals, boat-owners, water sports enthusiasts and other users of the harbour, pupils of the local national school, patrons of the rugby club, and touring visitors, can enjoy the beauty of the area in comfort and in safety."
