Mayo man to hold exhibition in Galway during ocean race

The G hotel in Galway will host Closer, an eclectic art exhibition by one of the west’s most promising artists Shane Cannon, from Sunday May 24 until Saturday June 6. Each painting is influenced by the unique experiences the artist has captured from modern living and life on Achill Island. Mary McCague, head of humanities and creative arts at Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, will officially open the exhibition at 3pm on Sunday May 24 where guests are invited to experience the vibrant display of paintings as part of an art trail, in conjunction with the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Galway.

Since graduating with an honours degree in fine art painting, Cannon has spent the last year building his art portfolio and exhibiting his creations throughout Ireland, before selecting the luxurious G for his debut solo show as the innovative design of the hotel complements his vibrant style and selection of distinctive paintings. Describing his work as “modern, aggressive, and non apologetic” Cannon believes there is something special about living beside the sea. “I am not a writer so I can't put it into words but I do try to express it in my art,” he said. Incorporating the magnificent scenery, breathtaking landscape, and traditional way of life on Achill into his painting has resulted in an outstanding collaboration of colour, imaginative designs, and creative themes reflected in his unique collection of paintings.
