Ballina to trial weekend pedestrianisation of Pearse Street

Pearse Street in Ballina is to become a pedestrianised street on Saturday evenings and Sundays for a trial period.

The street will be pedestrianised from 6.30pm on Saturday's until 8.30am on Monday's starting this Saturday, August 7 until September 27.

Welcoming the announcement local independent councillor Mark Duffy, who was the only councillor to vote for a similar trial last year said: "I believe that Pearse Street lends itself well to pedestrianisation, particularly in the summer months, which can help create a street with an improved shopping experience and a space for music and arts performances.

"This can create a space for Saturday evening entertainment and family themed events on Sundays. It would be great to see musicians and performers enhance the space especially during these times. Thank you to Declan Turnbull and the Ballina Municipal District for trialing this initiative."

A similar trail is in operation in Castlebar on Tucker Street, which sees the street closed to traffic from 6pm to 11pm each evening at the moment.
