Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Alan Dillon, has welcomed formal approval from HSE Estates for an €18.4 million extension at Mayo University Hospital.
The news was confirmed during a recent meeting with HSE West. The proposed extension is currently awaiting the appointment of a Building Design Team and this is likely to be in place before year-end. It is expected works will commence in 2022 and should be completed in 2023.
Deputy Dillon said: "I recently received confirmation that formal approval was granted by HSE Estates to proceed with the extension at Mayo University Hospital.
"The investment of €18.4 million will greatly increase capacity at the Emergency Department in MUH. Capacity has become an increasingly difficult situation at the hospital in recent years and the new extension will go a long way in increasing the space at the Emergency Department.
"The existing Emergency Department was built for around 25,000 patients per annum and has been operating under incredible pressure with numbers often exceeding that by 10,000 annually.
"Getting formal approval from HSE Estates is a critical step in progressing the extension at the hospital and I will be following-up with Health Minister, Stephen Donnelly, to ensure the Building Design Team is appointed without delay."
