Music Generation Mayo and Music Generation Sligo have partnered for the first time to launch a new interactive summer camp for children aged 7-12 years old from July 26 to 30.
At ‘Glock Rockin’ Beats’ children will learn how to play the glockenspiel and compose a new piece with top Irish percussionists, Alex Petcu and John Rousseau. This will culminate in a collaborative workshop and premiere of the new composition in autumn.
The camp will provide a first opportunity for young people in Mayo to receive tuition on this fun instrument. The cost of the week is €50, which includes the purchase of the glockenspiel. The camp will run from 10am-12pm on Zoom and children will be broken into smaller groups to work on their playing and composing skills.
The glockenspiel is a cheerful instrument with a bright, pure sound similar to a xylophone. It is simple to learn and has a set of tuned metal keys which are hit with mallets.
Beginning on the glockenspiel can help to enhance future instrumental learning by developing pitch recognition, hand eye co-ordination and rhythm. Learning an instrument has been proven to help the development of young minds, strengthen memory and reduce stress. Glockenspiel is the German for set of bells. It may be recognised in popular music such as Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Born to Run.’
