Cup competitions get Mayo League season up and running

Soccer: Mayo League Calor Gas Super Cup

It's all systems go for the junior teams in the Mayo League this weekend with the Calor Gas Super and Premier Cups kicking off the new season across the county.

This week also saw the release of the league fixtures across all divisions, with the leagues getting underway in all four divisions on July 18.

The Calor Gas Super and Premier Cups will give give teams a chance to get some game time into their legs ahead of the league season. The cups have been split in two, with the teams in the top two divisions playing in the Super Cup and the teams in the bottom two divisions in the Premier Cup.

The meeting on Sunday of Castlebar Celtic and Ballina Town at 2.30pm looks to be on paper the game of the weekend. The Hoops' are still the last team to claim the Super League title, having won it in 2019, and the 2020 season being brought to a halt before it could be completed last year due to Covid-19.

Michael McNicholas is still in charge of Celtic and he will be looking for his side to get off to a good start this term when they welcome the north Mayo men, who have lost the services of long-serving defender, Duane Helly, who retired after over 20 years with the side, and Fabiano, who moved back to Brazil after a number of years as a flying winger for Ballina.

Westport United will head to Station Rise on Sunday evening to take on fellow Super League side Ballyhaunis Town, with former Town man Gary Higgins now in their ranks - and this could be a major playing in United's quest to put themselves back to the top of the tree in Mayo football.

Manulla are another side who will be looking to have a real go at pushing for the league title this year and they have former Castlebar Celtic manager, Declan Kilkelly, in the dug-out for them this term. They are on the road this weekend against Premier Division outfit Straide and Foxford United.

There is an all Super League clash in Quigley Park on Saturday evening, when Ballyheane host Glenhest Rovers, with Ballyglass hosting Kiltimagh-Knock United in Keaveny Park at the same time.

Claremorris will be making the trip to north Mayo to take on Ballina Town's B team, while the final Super League side, Swinford, will host Snugboro United at 11am on Sunday morning as they look to get a win under their bet for the challenges that lie ahead later this season.
