New podcast reveals true stories of Mayo’s women in business

A new podcast and radio show launches Tuesday, June 29, profiling some of Mayo’s most enterprising women – and asking what we can all learn from their experience.

Hosted by former Mayo Ladies captain Maria Staunton and community broadcaster Mary Costello, each week’s guest is a woman in business either from Mayo or operating here. The show is called ‘Making It’.

Describing the guests, Maria Staunton said: "They’re drawn from diverse backgrounds, across all kinds of industries, from cookery to construction, from social tech to healthcare, from fashion to music, art, engineering, consultancy, product design and retail."

Co-host Mary Costello said: "We’ll hear their stories of success, failure, resilience and creativity. And along the way we’ll ask: what can we all learn from these enterprising women?”

The series was produced remotely throughout lockdown by Claremorris Community Radio with support from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, and will run for 12 episodes.

Asked why she got on board as a presenter, Maria Staunton said: "As manager of the Innovation Hub at GMIT, I work on a daily basis with male and female-led startups, so I know the determination and resilience that goes into starting and building a business. I get to hear these stories every day, so I wanted to help bring them to life for a wider audience. My sporting background – captaining Mayo Ladies to All Ireland League and Championship success in 2000 – has made me understand how hard work can make dreams come to life."

On her own involvement, Mary Costello said: "I’m a budding entrepreneur myself, and fascinated by women who go it alone in business. I love finding out what makes them tick, what gives them a buzz, and how they got where they are – I know listeners are going to love it too.

"We’d love to create a community around the show, so we’re asking people to connect with us and our guests on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – @makingitmayo."

Mayo’s Women in Business airs on Tuesdays at 2pm from June 29 on Claremorris Community Radio.
