Tripod tactics by Shell to Sea

Shell to Sea campaigners using a daring tripod technique halted the work being undertaken by Shell at the Corrib Gas landfall site at Glengad on Thursday morning.

At 5am Shell to Sea campaigners blocked access to the beach by erecting two specially-designed tripods, each 20 feet high. Two men attached themselves to the top of the tripods using climbing equipment.

By Thursday lunchtime the two men, who live locally, were still suspended from the tripods and had not been removed by gardaí nor Shell security.

Shell to Sea spokesperson Maura Harrington said: “Today's action shows that we are as determined as ever to obstruct this obscene project, and the giveaway of Irish natural resources.”
