Councillors pay tribute to accident victims

The members of Mayo County Council paid tribute to the two men who were killed in a car accident outside Belmullet last weekend. Cllr Gerry Coyle led the tributes to Garda Terence Dever and Stephen Conway who lost their lives in the tragedy.

Cllr Coyle said: “This was nothing short of a tragic accident, three people going to work and one person coming home from work. I would also like to express my wish for a speedy recovery to Garda Eneas McNulty, the accident happened very near my own premises and everybody who came in on Sunday was completely traumatised.” Achill based Cllr Mícheál McNamara spelt out the shock that engulfed Achill last Sunday when news of the accident broke. He told the meeting, “It was announced at Mass in Achill yesterday and there was just silence for minutes afterwards.” Cllr McNamara also told the meeting: “Terence was involved in every aspect of community life in Achill especially in ladies’ football and athletics.” Cllr Michael Holmes told the meeting: “I had lunch with Terence last Wednesday and little did I think it would be the last time I would speak to him. I know both families well and it’s a terrible tragedy.” Sympathies were also extended by Cathaoirleach Cllr Joe Mellett and County Manager Des Mahon. The council also passed on their condolences to Cllr Paddy McGuinness on the death of his nephew last week.
