Jubilant June at The Linenhall

The month of June features an abundance of virtual events for all the family at the Linenhall Arts Centre, encapsulating film, various music genres and a special activity for children and young people.

Associate Artist, Elaine Mears, is also calling on the people of Mayo to share their precious memories, for a fascinating new art project.

In the realm of music, there are two splendid offerings. On June 10, ‘New Music of Mayo’, a five-part series curated by Emer Mayock, commences on the Linenhall’s digital platform, featuring newly composed music, song, dance and poetry from 15 of Mayo’s marvellous traditional artists. Classical music fans can also get their fix online with ‘Music Network Presents Patrick Rafter and Fiachra Garvey’, on June 20.

Cruinniú na nÓg 2021 will be celebrated on June 12, inviting you and the young people in your life to get creative (freestyle! ) through dance, music and visual art. Three gorgeous videos channel just that, which parents and siblings are encouraged to watch with their youngest family members, and then get creative together at home and in nature surroundings.

Participants can submit photos, audio recordings, or short video clips of their resulting creations for display on the Linenhall’s website and social media pages. The submission deadline is June 9 at 5pm. ‘Guidelines for Submitting’ and the videos can be viewed on www.thelinenhall.com Associate Artist, Elaine Mears is striving to uncover - “If you could only keep one object that has sentimental value to you, what would you keep, and why?” - for her art project, ‘Memories’, and she is asking the public to think about what they treasure most and the memory it evokes.

Elaine will gather stories, infuse them together and create a piece of art, culminating in representations of precious objects, recordings of stories, smells, and blended materials, which combined, will bring all the memories together in one place. The piece will be exhibited in the Linenhall Arts Centre later in 2021, for the public to visit. If you would like to share your memories, please email: [email protected].

The latest Film Club instalment in association with Access Cinema is ‘A Girl from Mogadishu’, based on the testimony of Ifrah Ahmed. Fleeing war-torn Somalia in 2006, she is trafficked to Ireland where as an asylum-seeking refugee, she undergoes a traumatic medical examination which reveals the extent of her mutilation as a child.

Traumatised by the memory, she turns her experiences into a force for good, emerging as one of the world’s most foremost global activists against Female Genital Mutilation.
