Mayo Divisional Drugs Task Force has seized more than €50,000 worth of drugs over weekend

The Mayo Divisional Drugs Task Force has seized more than €50,000 worth of drugs after it carried out a number of drugs searches in the Mayo Division over the course of Friday and Saturday May 14, and 15.

On Friday May 14, following the search of a property in Murrisk area Westport Gardaí seized a quantity of suspected cannabis herb worth approximately €12,000 along with a small quantity of suspected ecstasy tablets and cash.

A woman in her early 30s was arrested at the scene and detained at Castlebar Garda Station detained under the provisions of Section 4 Criminal Justice Act 1984. She was later released without charge. A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

As part of an unrelated separate search on Saturday May 15, members of the Divisional Drugs Task Force assisted by Dutch from the Garda Dog Unit and local uniformed Gardaí carried out a search of a property in Ballina town.

Suspected cocaine, cannabis herb and ecstasy seized in Ballina on Saturday May 15

During the course of this search operation Gardaí seized €11,000 worth of suspected cocaine and approximately €9,800 worth of suspected cannabis herb. €1,800 worth of suspected Xanax tablets were also seized.

A man in his late 40s was arrested at the scene and detained at Ballina Garda Station. He was released without charge on Sunday afternoon May 16. A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in this case.

Furthermore on Saturday May 15 the Divisional Drugs Task Force with assistance from the Garda Dog Unit carried out a separate search in the Ardoughan area of Ballina. Following this search, suspected cocaine to the value of €17,500 was recovered.

These drugs were concealed on waste ground and was located with the assistance of "Dutch” from the Garda Dog Unit. Gardaí believe that the suspected cocaine was for the purpose of sale and supply in the Ballina area. No arrests have been made in this seizure but Gardaí are following a line of enquiry.

All drugs seized are subject to forensic analysis. Investigations are ongoing.
