Castlebar Regional Training Centre (CRTC ) has been successful in an application for funding for a state-of-the-art outdoor training facility at Lios na Circe, Saleen, Castlebar.

Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon said "I welcome the development of the dedicated outdoor training facility in Castlebar that includes €2 million in funding to be provided by the Department of Transport, while Mayo County Council have been given approval to the borrowing of €650,000 towards the cost of the facility.

Deputy Dillon has said: "This is great news for the Castlebar based training centre. The Council are going to tender for the construction of the training centre imminently. The scheme should take no more than 18 months to complete.

"The Council have confirmed that there will be four additional full-time jobs by the creation of the dedicated outdoor training centre. There will also be additional benefits to the local economy during construction and once the training centre has opened in terms of local suppliers, maintenance work, etc."

The existing Regional Training Centre at Aras an Chontae in the town, which has been in place for over 20 years, facilitates the training needs of staff in local authorities, group water schemes, utilities and numerous other public and private companies in the west and Midlands of the country with Mayo County Council as the lead authority.

Deputy Alan Dillon said "I have worked alongside Minister of State for Transport, Hildegarde Naughton to secure this funding and it is very welcomed.”

"The main benefits of the new dedicated outdoor training centre are as follows: Increase in the road reinstatement training to the local authority and private sectors leading to higher quality roads through improved reinstatement; Improved safety on site when carrying out the works through the increase in training; Better outcomes in terms of investment in roads by the state and the private sector.

"I want to compliment the staff of the Regional Training Centre for the excellent work they carry out, this new centre will enhance the outstanding work and service they provide." concluded Deputy Dillon.
