105 burglaries reported in Mayo last year

There were 105 burglaries in Mayo last year, according to a new report by alarm suppliers, Phonewatch. The figure is a reduction of 38 per cent on the previous year, according to the report, with almost 11,000 taking place nationwide and 800 of those in Connacht.

File being prepared for DPP on firearm incident

A file is being prepared for the DPP in relation to an incident involving a firearm in Swinford last week. On Friday, April 16, Gardai arrested a man following an investigation in relation to the production of a firearm in the town two days previously. They searched a property in Swinford at 11am last Friday and seized firearms and offensive weapons (subject to examination ). They arrested a man in his late 20s at the scene, he was brought to Ballina Garda Station for questioning and later released without charge - with a file being prepared for the DPP.

Works approved for Coláiste Pobail Acla

Local TDs have welcomed confirmation that Coláiste Pobail Acla, Achill Sound, (Roll No: 76150V ), has been granted funds under the Emergency Works Scheme. Emergency Works have been approved for electrical works to the original school area. This follows periodic inspection reports. Fianna Fáil TD, Dara Calleary, said:"Funding has been secured for Colaiste Pobail Acla under the Department of Education’s Emergency Scheme. Electrical to the original school area is affected by defects and will be made safe. I am happy to have made representation alongside local councillor Paul McNamara and look forward to these essential works taking place." Deputy Michael Ring added: "I look forward to the works being completed as quickly as possible for the Health & Safety of the pupils and teachers in this school."

Last day to register for Women's Mini Marathon

With less than two weeks to go until the Mayo.ie Western People Women's Mini Marathon, the closing date to get a T-Shirt and medal is today, Friday, April 23. Event organisers, Mayo Sports Partnership, is making a final call for women, teens and families to get involved. Currently 1,500 women from all over the West, Ireland and beyond, in countries such as the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand, are registered for this year's virtual event, which is also part of the Mayo Day celebrations. Close to 300 teenagers from a number of schools across Mayo are also ready to go, having participated in a 30 minutes a day activity challenge during April. In addition, 700 Primary School Children are signed up for the Primary Schools 2K Fun Run, which also forms part of the weekend activities. Over the May Bank Holiday Weekend May 1 to 3, you can complete 10k 'Your Way' for 'Your Hero' and raise funds for charity at the same time. Davitt College approved for additional accommodation

Fine Gael TD for Mayo, Alan Dillon, has welcomed an approval of funding for Davitt College, Castlebar. The Department of Education has sanctioned additional accommodation comprising of 4 x main classrooms, 2 x classrooms, and 2 x WCs. Deputy Dillon said: "It is fantastic to see numbers in Davitt College continue to grow year on year and this additional accommodation will be of enormous benefit to the students attending this school. It is very welcome news that additional infrastructure will be provided at post primary level in Castlebar."

Garrymore GAA and Gortskehy NS Online Bingo
