The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Richard Finn, has welcomed the recent elevation in status of Knock Shrine by Pope Francis to a designated international sanctuary of special eucharistic and Marian devotion.
At the April meeting of the local authority this week, Cllr Finn said: “It is a wonderful achievement for Knock and Mayo.” He added that since the apparition, it has become a centre of devotion for locals and visitors alike from all parts of the world and has a considerable appeal as a destination attracting around 1.6 million visitors a year to the county. The Cathaoirleach also said: “It now positions Knock Shine and Mayo alongside other international locations as a world class destination for religious and spiritual tourism.”
