Twelve Mayo projects have been included in the Built Heritage Scheme for 2021, announced by Minister of State Malcolm Noonan, as part of a €3m funding scheme for 477 built heritage projects provided by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in association with the 31 Local Authorities
Mayo Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon said: "It is fantastic to see the range of projects across Mayo which will be supported by an investment of €72,000 for the county.
"This fund will help to safeguard our rich built heritage, keeping many buildings in use and helping to bring many others back into use. It will also have a knock-on economic benefit by generating jobs, providing further employment for heritage contractors and other skilled crafts and tradespeople."
Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary also welcomed the funding, saying: "In addition to supporting owners and custodians of historic and protected structures to safeguard and maintain their properties, this funding will also provide a welcome boost to local construction and heritage trades by facilitating works.
“The successful projects in Mayo will receive grant awards of between €2,500 and €10,000. These awards will provide much-needed economic stimulus in the successful project’s local areas and will give employment to the many small businesses, skilled conservation specialists and tradespeople involved in heritage-related construction activity and it is also an investment in this Government’s commitment under the Programme for Government to encourage traditional building skills."
Fine Gael TD Michael Ring said: "This is a very important scheme which greatly assists in the maintenance and protection of protected structures in our locality. It is also an excellent boost for the construction industry once construction resumes. I am pleased to see that twelve worthy projects have received funding."
