Mayo PPN community groups commended in showcasing Climate Action and Biodiversity

Environmental community groups across the county were recently featured in a new online video series, which attracted thousands of viewers from across the world.

The video series highlighted the work of several community groups working to make Mayo a more environmentally friendly county. These included Mulranny Green Plan, Bertra Climate Action, The River Moy Trust, Bangor Erris Parish Hall, Tourmakeady Sustainable Energy Group, Balla Community Group and The Ballina Green Town Group.

The initiative was developed by the Mayo Public Participation Network in collaboration with the Climate Action Office in Mayo County Council. It has received recognition from environmentalist, architect and television personality, Duncan Stewart.

Commenting on the video series, Stewart praised the county on its tremendous work, stating: "It would be very useful for other community groups in the country to have a look at these videos to get some ideas on what projects they could embark on."

The RTÉ presenter of Eco Eye who is known for his environmental activism, was keen to give credit to the community groups involved. In Tourmakeady, 10% of the housing stock, 60 houses, have been retrofitted from an F rating to a B standard. Stewart believes this is an 'incredible achievement' while commenting on the work of Ballina’s Green Town Initiative, Stewart said 'every town in Ireland should be doing what Ballina is doing, the spirit of volunteerism and collaboration in this town is great'.

Echoing Mr Stewart’s words was Mary Costello, resource worker with Mayo PPN, who said: "I am delighted that Mayo PPN and the Climate Action Office were in a position to highlight this fantastic work. Community groups are working tirelessly each day to improve society and we are delighted in the PPN to be in a position to assist them."
