Fianna Fáil TD, Dara Calleary has received clarification that work around the erection on and maintenance of gravestones, is allowed under current restrictions. T
he issue had been raised by a number of local councillors in recent weeks, but they were told by Mayo County Council management that work was not allowed to be carried out under current restrictions. However this week Deputy Calleary received confirmation the work could take place.
He said on Wednesday: "In recent weeks I have been working with locally based monumental sculptors in Mayo to have their work deemed essential under Level 5 Restrictions. This morning clarification has been issued stating that works in burial grounds is in fact deemed essential under all levels of the business continuity framework. I am very pleased to bring clarity for our monumental sculptors but also for grieving families who can now proceed to have headstones erected in memory of their loved ones."
