FG’s FairCare will end patients on trolleys in Mayo General Hospital

Fine Gael has developed a radical and patient-focused solution that will fix the Irish Health Service according to Mayo Fine Gael TD John O' Mahony.

Deputy O’Mahony said: “Fine Gael have looked in particular detail at the Dutch health system, which spends a similar amount on health on a per capita basis to Ireland, but has minimal waiting lists and is ranked number one in Europe for healthcare.

“Over the last 10 years the health service has become a shambles. Regularly people are left on trolleys in A&E in Mayo General Hospital, there are waiting lists that go on for months, outpatient waiting lists that go on for years and cancelled operations across the country. As a result, Ireland’s health system is now ranked 24th in Europe in terms of value for money.

According to Dep O’Mahony the role of hospitals such as Mayo General Hospital, will be strengthened. Hospital management and control will be decentralised so that they are in a position to best respond to the needs of the local community and their patients and new primary care centres would be developed where groups of GPs, together with other healthcare professionals, in Mayo will treat patients for free, out of modern purpose built premises with access to x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy so that patients can be diagnosed in their communities by the doctors who know them best.

The Faircare system will also deliver Universal Health Insurance where everyone in Mayo will be insured. Some will be fully subsidised and some partially subsidised by the Government.
