Roads SPC adopts roadside memorials policy

The roads and transportation Strategic Policy Committee (SPC ) of Mayo County Council has adopted a proposed policy in relation to managing Roadside Memorials, in the interests of road safety.

At their meeting this week, the SPC the committee adopted the proposed policy put forward by the council management and it will go before a full meeting of the local authority for adoption. Under the policy, an application will have to be made to the council before any roadside memorials are put in place, but existing memorials will not be affected by the new policy. There will be no fees for the new applications and they will not be subject to planning.

A maximum size applies and memorials cannot be illuminated. They are also to be kept free from flowers, ornaments or materials which will give rise to litter over time or cause a distraction to drivers and passers-by. The applications will be considered by the council's roads section on a case by case basis.
