While the current pandemic has significantly altered everything in our daily lives, and with social distancing and self-isolation measures now looking to be extended, it’s not surprising that it’s having an effect on many people’s mental health.

Our bodies and our brains are conditioned for surviving, so when we’re put in high pressure situations like ‘how am I going to pay my mortgage' and 'how am I going to look after my kids', our bodies and brains react to this threat by feeling anxious and frightened.

And while so much might feel out of your control right now, there are things that are within your control - simple tasks that can help to calm our bodies and our mind - such as the following:

- Taking even one minute during your day to pause, to take a breath, and to come into your senses, noting what can you see, hear, smell, touch and taste.

- Walking, for just even a few minutes, can begin to break down excess stress hormones. Try taking your music out and notice your body moving, your surroundings and the feel of the wind/sun on your face.

- Telling yourself that you are safe and even physically creating safety, by snuggling up with a blanket, making yourself a cup of tea and phoning someone you love and trust.

- Remembering that you have already braved almost a whole year of this lockdown, and you have survived every single day, the good and the bad ones.

We have times where we thrive, and we have times where we survive. And that’s okay. It’s okay to just manage and it’s okay to take it day by day.
